Complete Guide to EMI Calculation: Home, Car and Personal Loans
What is EMI?
EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed payment amount made by a borrower to a lender at a specified date each month. EMI includes both principal and interest components.
The EMI Formula
EMI = [P x R x (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N - 1], where P = Principal, R = Monthly interest rate (annual rate / 12), N = Number of monthly installments.
How EMI is Split
In early years, a larger portion of your EMI goes toward interest. In later years, more goes toward principal. This is called amortization. Use our EMI calculator to see the full schedule.
Reducing Your EMI Burden
1. Make a larger down payment. 2. Choose a longer tenure (but you pay more total interest). 3. Negotiate a lower interest rate. 4. Consider prepayments when possible.
EMI for Different Loan Types
Home loans typically have lower rates (7-10%) but longer tenures (15-30 years). Car loans have higher rates (8-12%) with shorter tenures (3-7 years). Personal loans have the highest rates (10-24%).
